"As an old Detroiter, I remember when the Detroit vs Everyone shirt blew up an Em's song came out and it was all over. I myself was apprehensive that they would be divisive, that they would indeed be seen as negative. But after reading the story behind the message and what it meant to the creators the message really began to resonate with me. It wasn't meant to be exclusive or start a divide but instead, a way to empower a group from within that generally feels powerless in regards to “the rest”. A way to say, " you may never get it, and that is okay because I have this community that does" Often I think members or marginalized or oppressed groups tread a thin line of creating self-empowerment, that isn't built on the hate of the dominant group, while also at some point having to let go of the desire or idea that they have to "play nice" to keep the dominate group happy. I am not equating the struggles of powerlifting community to the struggles of oppressed groups in our countries but I think the same concept applies of wanting to create a balance that encourages allies BUT also understanding that your worth, your strive for “freedom” is not dependent on those others and that they are a “tool” not the solution and you, and your community with or without them is enough." - GWPL Ambassador Adrienne Thomas
